Frequently Asked Questions
Is concrete the same as cement?
Surprisingly, no! Cement is actually only one of the smaller ingredients of concrete. Cement makes up 10% - 15% of a concrete mixture. Concrete is comprised of aggregates such as sand, crushed stone, gravel, and water. The combination of the ingredients harden and fuse the aggregate materials into a solid mass. That is concrete. When concrete mixes with water and hardens, that is concrete.
What type of driveway lasts the longest, concrete or asphalt?
Asphalt is less durable than concrete. Concrete can last fifty years or more and the only degreasing as necessary to remove oil or dirt. A concrete driveway doesn't need be sealed, but it can be if desired every 4 to 5 years. Asphalt is not as hard as concrete meaning it will break down faster than concrete. While asphalt can last twenty five plus years, it will require regular maintenance. Asphalt needs to be re-sealed every 1 - 3 years.
What is the advantage to using concrete for interior countertops, sinks and floors?
There are many good reasons to use concrete in lieu of traditional materials for interior floors, countertops, sinks and more. First, concrete is extremely durable and can take the daily use of interior surfaces without wear or damage. Secondly, it is also versatile. It can be stamped or stained to give a luxurious high end look to countertops, sinks and floors. Third, using concrete to finish interior floors can be an inexpensive solution to give any indoor living space a polished, contemporary look. Finally, concrete is low-maintenance and can take a lifetime of wear and tear yet still give a look of sophistication.
What is Stamped Concrete?
Stamped concrete is a textured concrete treatment that can look like flagstone, tile, brick and can even be made to look like wood. It gives a luxurious look to patios, pool decks, driveways, walkways, garage and basement floors, and even kitchen & bathroom countertops. Stamped concrete is also surprisingly lower maintenance and lower cost than many other surface treatments or premium mineral products like quartz or granite. When properly sealed, stamped concrete can be treated with a slip resistant coating and when properly installed and sealed, lasts for years to come.
What is Stained Concrete
Stained concrete is concrete with color added to its surface. While "stained concrete" is a broad term used to define color additives used in and on concrete, a stained concrete look can be obtained through many means. Acid staining creates a chemical reaction with the concrete that forever changes the concrete's surface. Acid staining is the best way to stain old concrete. Since acid staining permeates the concrete's surface, it is more resistant to chipping and allows some of the natural features of the concrete to show through. Another type of stain is a water based concrete stain. Water based concrete stains are topical, in other words, they don't mix with the concrete, the water based stain sits on top of the concrete somewhat like a paint. This allows for more vivid colors when applied. With water based concrete staining there is a possibility that, without proper sealing and maintenance that chips or cracks could appear thus exposing the natural color of the basic concrete underneath. That said, water based stain is more appropriate for indoor treatments that won't be exposed to the elements, high traffic, or heavy use.
